The useful thickness question is whether a particular configuration can produce the required part in the specified material. A cut that separates a block is a different acceptance target from a finished profile with controlled dimensions and an acceptable edge through its thickness.
Define what counts as a successful cut
State the material grade, thickness and drawing. Then define the finished condition: a blank for later machining, an as-cut edge, or a mating feature that needs inspection. Include the acceptable taper and surface finish where these affect the part's use.
As thickness increases, the behavior of the cutting stream through the material becomes relevant to the whole cut face. Checking only the top outline can miss a dimensional difference at the bottom. Required edge quality also affects the cutting-speed selection.
Match the pump and the cutting setup
Pump capability, the cutting head and abrasive setup belong in the same assessment. Pressure should be stated as a working condition for the job. A peak pressure specification alone does not establish an accepted thickness, finished tolerance or cutting time.
VICHOR recommends the WCM-P90III for carbon steel over 150 mm. This is a configuration-specific capability statement. It should be assessed against the actual material and required result; it is not a universal thickness limit or a guarantee of identical finish across all metals.
The workpiece must also fit the table and head clearance. Check its support, loading arrangement and the route of the cutting head. Vertical travel and cuttable thickness describe different things and should be checked separately.
Evaluate a representative feature
For a thick-stock job, propose a trial that includes a feature important to acceptance. Record the material, pump, head, working settings and cut time. Inspect the top, bottom and cut face against the agreed requirements.
Specify whether the job begins at an exposed edge or needs a pierce within the material. Include the entry method in the proposed trial. A successful edge-start cut alone does not establish the result of a different entry arrangement.
Bring the job into the discussion
